JAN C. SCHLEGEL - Silent giants
Opening September 16th
We are happy to share that from September 16, Jan C. Schlegel's Silent Giants will be on view at NH Collection Piazza Carlina.
The Silent Giants project room, realized in collaboration with WILLAS contemporary — Stockholm, presents a selection of ten works from the eponymous project — a captivating series of handmade platinum print photographs by German fine art photographer and printer Jan C. Schlegel, focusing on Brutalist architecture. Through the lens of large format cameras, Schlegel presents these buildings not merely as structures but as presences — quiet, monumental, and imbued with memory. What initially appears as plain concrete gradually reveals a human quality: rhythm, tension, stillness. This series transcends architectural documentation. It emerges from prolonged observation — spending time with a building, waiting, watching, allowing it to unfold. Schlegel’s work is fundamentally about perception and the shift that occurs when we truly look. Many of these Brutalist structures were conceived with utopian ambition. Today, some appear abandoned or misunderstood, yet within their concrete forms lie traces of human ambition, failure, resistance, and memory.
Schlegel photographs them as he would a person — with soft light, patience, and an attentive gaze that delves beneath the surface. The result is architecture reimagined as individual character and mood. In Silent Giants, Brutalism becomes more than a style. It becomes a collection of presences — silent, monumental, and deeply human. Each piece is a handmade platinum print, celebrated for its rich depth, subtle tonal range, and lasting permanence. The works are available as limited edition prints in two sizes (56 × 76 cm and 40 × 50 cm) and as a complete set of 19 platinum prints in a handcrafted portfolio. Jan C. Schlegel is internationally recognized for his distinctive black-and-white images that capture the planet’s beauty and diversity. He is dedicated to traditional photographic printing methods, including platinotype, ambrotype, and silver-gelatin prints, crafting unique, enduring works. Schlegel began his photographic journey at age nine and has exhibited widely, with works included in prominent collections worldwide.
