Anton Corbijn

#5

WILLAS contemporary is thrilled to present the exhibition entitled #5 by the Dutch artist Anton Corbijn at Sotheby’s in Stockholm.

Anyone with a slight interest in visual culture and music are familiar with Corbijn´s work. He is known to have shaped the identity of bands like U2 and Depeche Mode and visualised popular music for the past 40 years. The way Corbijn captured his subjects using grainy film in natural light has become an integral part of our visual culture.

In Stockholm, Corbijn’s work has been presented by Fotografiska in the exhibitions '1-2-3-4' in 2016 and 'Inwards & Onwards' back in 2012.

#5 is the most recent body of work released by Mr Corbijn, presenting timeless portraits of notable figures such as Nick Cave, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, U2 and Tom Waits to name a few. Corbijn searched his archives looking for photographs that never found their way into the mainstream or made cover of an album, but still contains a timeless quality.

Corbijn discovered a few lost gems, such as the photograph of Johnny Depp with a halo in the background, and the portrait of the legend Keith Richards. The large prints (measuring 142 cm square when framed) from the ‘#5' series are made available in a limited edition of 5.

Official opening 29th of September 2022 from 5-7 pm - Anton Corbijn will be present at the opening.

Anton Corbijn is now as famous as the famous people he has photographed and filmed. Now the style-forming photographer in Sweden is to open his exhibition "#5" organized by WILLAS contemporary.

SQUARING THE CIRCLE

Celebrated photographer, creative director and filmmaker Anton Corbijn’s first feature documentary SQUARING THE CIRCLE (the story of hipgnosis) tells the story of Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey “Po” Powell, the creative geniuses behind the iconic album art design studio, Hipgnosis, responsible for some of the most recognizable album covers of all time. They formed Hipgnosis in Cambridge during the ferment of the sixties and became rock royalty during the boom time of the seventies. They conjured into existence sights that no one had previously thought possible, produced visuals which popularized music that had previously been considered fringe, and were at the white-hot center of the maddest, funniest and most creative era in the history of popular music.

During this period, record companies didn’t dictate to acts like Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Paul McCartney what their LP covers should look like - Storm and Po did. They made money; they lost money. They did great things; they did silly things. They fell out bitterly; they made up. They never played a note, but they changed music. The film features brand new interviews with Roger Waters, David Gilmour & Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, Jimmy Page & Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Graham Gouldman of 10cc, Noel Gallagher, and many more.
